Recently, I was on an expedition tour with ten members group. All were very cooperative and were enjoying every activity but one of fellow member seemed disturbed and uncomfortable. When asked, he told about the feet problem he was having because of rashes and pressed spots. The problem was expected to become more serious within day or two because he told us that he is diabetic. Anyway, the rashes were cured but the incident was an eye opener for many group members. To my surprise, seven out of ten members were unaware about the availability of diabetic shoes.
Diabetic footwear range is specially designed keeping in mind the feet sensitivity of diabetic patients. The diabetic feet are more prone to wounds, infections and rashes; so, these need special care. These shoes are made over flat heal soles with broad front uppers. Lace tying area is secured by providing double cover and soft material eyelets. The uppers of Diabetic Shoes are made with ‘no seam inside’ concept and the surrounding edges are smoothened to extend the comfort level.
However, it is also true that some diabetics do not feel expected comfort or safety even in best footwear. As per my experience, I can say that the most common reason for this failure is wrong selection. First, I would like to mention that only few companies and brands are certified by the insurance companies; and, it is must to get only the certified brand for getting reimbursement. Propet, Orthofeet, Aetrex, New Balance and Dr. Comfort have been my favorites for choosing dress shoes, casual shoes, sneakers or hiking boots.
Most of these brands offer shoes or boot range with inserts but the accurate size should be the focus area. Inserts are meant to adjust the minor gaps in sides but definitely not for adjusting the improper size. Major diabetic shoes brands offer customization facility that allows the buyers to get accurate sized and shaped footwear, which they really need.
